Flowers – whether you’re on the receiving end or the giving end – bring such joy and are yet one of life’s most simple pleasures.Perth florist, Beautiful Bunches’ Sarah McMillan has some ideas on how to get the best from your flowers.
“It’s advisable to trim the stems of cut flowers regularly, as they can seal up preventing water and nutrients from getting to the actual blooms.Flower stems should be cut by around two centimetres before being arranged in a container.    The general rule is to cut straight on soft stems and at an angle on woody stems, such as roses and hydrangeas. The bottom of these stems should then be pulverised with the back or handle of the secateurs.Tulips need to be cut often as they are the only flower that continues to grow after cutting.”
All deliveries from Beautiful Bunches florist in Perth come with a water enhancer to prolong the life of the arrangement.Adding a tiny amount of household bleach to the water also acts as a water enhancer.Leaves that are under the water will rot, so they should all be trimmed off.  This will stop algal growth in the water which isn’t great for flowers. The water should be refreshed every few days.
Flowers don’t like direct sunlight, and should not be too close to a heater or fire.
Perth florist, Sarah McMillan from Beautiful Bunches continued : “Specific flowers need specific treatment. For example, gerberas should have their stems cut by about a centimetre before placing them in about seven cms of boiling water for 10 seconds.Air bubbles will emerge from the bottom of the stems. The flowers should then be put into cool water to refresh.
Droopy roses can also be encouraged to revive, which should not happen if they’re from Beautiful Bunches !  If roses are drooping, cut at least 3 centimetres off the stems and place in boiling water for 30 seconds. They should then be put into cool water.
“If you’re lucky enough to receive fresh roses, place them in iced water for ten minutes, then put into boiling water for 30 seconds to scald the stems. The stems then need to be cut on the angle with a good pair of scissors or a sharp knife.
Use a match to singe flowers that have milky stems that are oozing sap.Flowers that have hairy stems, for eg. gerbera daisies, should not be fully immersed in water.  They only require about 7cm of water.
If you receive a bunch of flowers from your Perth florist and want to arrange it yourself using oasis, here are some helpful tips.Put the block of oasis into a container of water.  Let it absorb water and sink on its own.If the oasis is submerged, it will create an airblock in the middle of it which will prevent flowers from accessing water, and they will die prematurely.
Beautiful Bunches has been a popular florist in Perth for many years and has earned a reputation for flower deliveries that are professionally arranged and supported by personal service and attention to detail.  If you’re lucky enough to receive a special bunch of flowers, take note of the hints and tips and your flowers will last a surprisingly long time.
